Kyocera Teaches: What is LiFi?

Have you ever imagined accessing the internet through light? While light is already used to transmit data via fiber optic cables, it can also be leveraged to send wireless network signals.

LiFi, short for Light Fidelity, is a groundbreaking wireless communication technology that uses light waves instead of radio waves to transmit data — similar to WiFi, but significantly faster and more secure.

LiFi operates by modulating binary data onto the intensity of LED bulbs — or even laser light — at speeds so fast the human eye cannot detect any flicker. Special receivers in devices such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones capture these light signals and convert them back into data.

■Key Advantages

1. Blazing Speed – In laboratory tests at Kyocera, LiFi has achieved speeds exceeding 100 Gbps — up to 100 times faster than WiFi.

2. Enhanced Security – Unlike WiFi or 5G, which broadcast signals over wide areas, LiFi is confined to specific illuminated spaces, making interception far more difficult.

3. No Congestion – Operating in the visible light or infrared spectrum, LiFi avoids interference from crowded radio frequencies.

4. Ideal for RF-Sensitive Environments – LiFi is perfectly suited for locations where radio waves are restricted or ineffective, such as hospitals, airplanes, and underwater communication.
